This is Captain Shawn English (L) with Wayne Teegardin at the 2005 Diver's Reunion.

On December 3rd the diving community lost a friend and a brother in Baghdad, Iraq to an improvised explosive device.

This is tech sergeant Robert Rayback (r) a member of the 1053rd Engineer Port Construction and Repair Group during World War II. On January 27, 2007 the army diving community lost a brother and a friend.

Shawn leaves behind a wife and three sons. He and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Rest in Peace Shawn

Robert left Des Moines, Washington, in February 1943 for

basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, then transferred to New York for training at the Navy Salvage and Diving School.  His unit was assigned to perform underwater salvage, construction, and demolition work in harbors, rivers, and ports in France, Belgium, and

Germany.

              Following V-E Day, he was transferred directly from the European Theatre to the Philippines.  He was honorably discharged from the service in December of 1945.

              Robert earned the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, a sharp shooter’s badge, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Deputy French Consul, and he was recently honored by the Governor of Wyomingfor devotion and dedication to our nation in time of war. 

              Robert was an active member of Afton, Wyoming’s, VFW Post #4797 and a fan of the U.S. Army Divers Newsletter.
